With 17 miles of pristine white beach, it is the perfect escape from your daily routine and the stress of city living. Right out the front door of your Dauphin Island vacation rental, you’ll find much-needed rest and relaxation among the sights and sounds of nature. Dauphin Island is a safe, family-friendly beach destination that everyone will love!

Outdoor Activities

Looking for activities to enjoy with the kids? There are plenty of things to do on Dauphin Island, so there is no risk of anyone getting bored. Consider wildlife viewing. Dauphin Island is home to an incredible array of plant and animal biodiversity.

You’ll have the opportunity to witness breathtaking beauty, from seasonal bird migrations to sea turtle nesting

From May to November, thousands of sea turtles return to Dauphin Island to lay their own eggs. Interruption of nesting is strictly prohibited, but visitors are welcome to observe from afar.

Boat tours give visitors an up-close and personal look at the aquatic life in the Gulf, which is home to sharks, game fish, dolphins, and much more. If you book a boat tour specifically for dolphin watching, you’re almost guaranteed a sighting.

The island is home to over 350 species of birds and serves as a critical migratory habitat. During the Dauphin Island migration season, there are sometimes so many birds congregating that they cover an entire area, a phenomenon known as “fallout.”

The Audubon Bird Sanctuary, one of the Top 4 Birding Destinations in North America, is your best place to start birdwatching. With over 164 acres of habitat, there are six different trails to wander. Whether you are serious about birding or hoping for some fresh air, the sanctuary is a fantastic place to explore.

Indian Shell Mound Park is another ideal place for birders that history buffs will also appreciate. In addition to its beautiful forested trails, the park features archaeological mounds consisting of discarded oyster shells and fish. The mounds were formed by Dauphin Island’s original Native American inhabitants over 500 years ago.

Of course, you can’t miss the iconic Fort Gaines. The fort is a pre-Civil war brick fortification, still standing with original cannons, a blacksmith shop, tunnels, and kitchens. Walk the grounds, and on special occasions, live actors will recreate historical battles that took place here.

Uncrowded Beaches

You’ll find several white, sandy beaches on Dauphin Island. Well-kept facilities and pathways are available at Dauphin Island Public Beach, the most popular beach among tourists.

However, if you’re looking for something a little quieter and more secluded, West End Public Beach is the most isolated. It is located on the western side of the island, away from tourist attractions and shops, making it a favorite among the locals. There is also the East End Beach near Fort Gaines.

A well-kept secret – at the far edge of the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, you’ll find beach access with incredible dune views, perfect for a romantic getaway.
