Don’t Miss Exploring Historical Fort Gaines During Your Dauphin Island Vacation

For over 150 years, Fort Gaines has guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay. This pre-Civil war brick fortification still stands today with original cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, and tunnels. It serves as an iconic piece of Dauphin Island history, a local attraction that can’t be missed.

Location

The fort is located on the east end of the island. It is a short walk from The Estuarium and numerous small shops and restaurants. It’s only a 3-minute drive from the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and a 5-minute drive from downtown. Opening hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Events

Time your Fort Gaines visit to match local events to make the most of your experience.

156th Battle of Mobile Bay

On August 1st, prepare for live demonstrations of the Battle of Mobile Bay, which lives on in the American imagination for the famous command given by Union Admiral David Farragut: “Damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead!”

In addition to reenactments of the event, the canon sounds each 45 minutes in honor of the soldiers who fought. Blacksmith demonstrations will also be on hand all day, and there will be plenty of other activities to bring the fort to life.

5th Annual Massacre Island

Pirates stormed Mobile Bay in 1711 and attacked Dauphin Island, which at the time was known as “Massacre Island,” given such a name because it had been discovered with a huge pile of human skeletons. On September 12th and 13th, pirates will reenact their pillaging of the island and fight against British and Spanish galleons. Come for a show and to search for pirates’ treasure.

37th Annual Renaissance Festival

Step back in time to the Middle Ages with knights in armor storming the fort. Watch melee’s and sieges and pay homage to the lords, ladies, artists, and medieval merchants of the court. This special event occurs October 31st, a truly memorable way to celebrate your next Halloween!

The Fall Campaign

On November 14, World War II soldiers will be demonstrating their daily lives to visitors. There will also be authentic camping and blacksmithing in the original blacksmith shop.
