How to Get Around Dauphin Island – Driving, Biking, & More!

If you want a relaxing and fun vacation with the family, look no further than Dauphin Island, your own little slice of paradise right here in Alabama. Though the island is just seven miles long, there is plenty to see and do, and the whole family will find something new and create amazing memories together.

Since the island is so small, it’s relatively easy to get around, and everything is conveniently located near our Dauphin Island rentals. Here is everything you need to know about navigating the island.

What is on Dauphin Island, Alabama?

Dauphin Island is full of great beaches and fun attractions for the entire family. Head to the south side of the island to reach the Gulf of Mexico, or go north to find Mobile Bay and the Mississippi Sound. This island is full of fun attractions, like the gorgeous beaches all around, Fort Gaines on the eastern side of the island, and the Estuarium, a saltwater and freshwater aquarium near the ferry dock.

Streets and Beach Access Points

When you come to Dauphin Island, you’re obviously going to want to spend time on the beach, and there are a few ways you can get there. Dauphin Island Public Beach is one of the more popular spots, and there is parking available on-site for $5 per car. This beach sits on Bienville Boulevard, one of the main roads on the island.  The beach is located right next to an elementary school, so be aware that traffic may be heavy if you come at the end of the school day. Parking is also a fair distance from the beach itself, so you may want to pack light.

Dauphin Island Public Beach is considered the main beach of the island, and it is situated on the western side. If you take Bienville Boulevard all the way to the eastern side of the island, you will find a separate public beach. This is a better spot for fishing or boating.  There is a parking lot available on this beach as well that’s a bit more convenient than its west end counterpart.

What is Traffic Like?

Since the island is so small, you may be wondering if you need to drive to all of your destinations. Here, you will definitely encounter less traffic than you would in larger cities like Gulf Shores or Orange Beach. There is only one four-way stop and no streetlights!

However, driving can still be slow along the main road of the island. If you do choose to drive to your attractions, you may want to add a few extra minutes to your commute time, especially during the first part of the morning or right after school hours.

Slow Down on Vacation

Your trip should be an opportunity to get away from it all, so if you don’t want to bother with a car, Dauphin Island is the perfect place to take it slow. You are easily able to bike, walk, or jog around the island, as everything is relatively close.

Once you visit Dauphin Island, you can see for yourself why it is a favorite destination among many. Take the time to stop and smell the roses in this fun and quaint vacation spot. Our Dauphin Island condos and homes are perfect for any family.
