Where is Dauphin Island Located?

Getting to Dauphin Island from Mobile, AL

Dauphin Island is located just about 45 minutes from Mobile, AL, and about 2.5 hours from New Orleans, LA.

It can be accessed by the 3-mile-long, high-rise bridge that connects the island to the mainland along AL-193 S, or by the Mobile Bay Ferry, which connects the eastern end of Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan on the mainland at Mobile Point.

The primary vehicle route to Dauphin Island follows AL-193 S from Mobile. You will leave Mobile, AL on I-10 W, eventually hitting AL-193 S at exit 17A-B. AL-193 S will take you to the heart of Dauphin Island.

You will continue down and over the 3-mile-bridge. About 40 miles long from Mobile, this route is the fastest and most direct way of getting to Dauphin Island by vehicle from that area.

If you’re coming to Dauphin Island from New Orleans

  • Take the 1-10 E from New Orleans about 2 hours (130 miles), eventually taking Exit 10 toward Bayou La Batre.
  • Make a left on Half Mile Road after about 3 miles.
  • Make a right onto Bellingrath Rd after another 3 miles.
  • Make a left onto AL-188 E after heading south about 9 miles.
  • Make a right onto AL-193 S/Alabama’s Coastal connection after 3 miles which takes you over the bridge and onto Dauphin Island.

Taking the Mobile Bay Ferry to Dauphin Island

If you are near the Gulf Shores, AL area, it’s also about a 35-minute straight drive west from Gulf Shores, AL to Fort Morgan/Mobile Point along W Fort Morgan Road/AL-180. There you can see the fascinating Fort Morgan historic site and also catch the Mobile Bay Ferry to Dauphin Island.

The ferry will take about 40 minutes to arrive on the island during a scenic trip across Mobile Bay where you can spot dolphins, pelicans and other wildlife on a relaxing ride.
