About the Track
The track at the Mobile International Speedway has a beautiful history. The man who built the track was known as Skip; however, his real name was Walter Wetjen. He broke ground in 1964, and the track would open in 1965. The track hosted small stock car races for the first two years of operation. It was not until the 1980’s that the track would host bigger races, including NASCAR and many other events.
There have been many large names that have started at the Mobile International Speedway. Notable racers such as Red Farmer, Bobby Allison, Rusty Wallace, Jody Ridley, and others have come to Alabama to show their skills. However, career racers aren’t the only ones who have graced this track. If the Mobile International Speedway looks familiar to you, it’s likely because you’ve seen it in the opening scenes of the 2009 movie The Final Destination (the fourth movie in the Final Destination series)!
The Mobile International Speedway is located at 7800 Park Boulevard in Irvington, Alabama. It can seat up to 6,000 guests and has parking, restrooms, a locker room with showers, and concessions. There is a large scoreboard to see who is winning and a press area.
The Gulf Coast Racing Series
The Gulf Coast Racing Series is one of the most popular events that takes place here at Mobile International Speedway. (In addition to the race in Mobile, this series also has races at Houston Motorsports Park in Texas.) The series will utilize only American Racer tires on eight- or ten-inch wheels. American Racer has over 800 diverse types of racing tires, so you’re sure to see some impressive vehicles!
The Gulf Coast Racing Series has already begun for 2022, providing plenty of fun for families across the South. But if you haven’t attended a race yet, you still have a chance! You can see more of the Gulf Coast Racing Series at Mobile International Speedway on July 16, 2022, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Luckily for those planning trips to Mobile soon, the 16-race Gulf Coast Racing Series continues into October, so there are plenty of chances to catch a race. At Mobile International Speedway, races in this series will take place on July 16, August 13, August 27, September 3, and October 29.
During these races, you can see events in several different categories, including Eco Stock, Legacy, Pro Trucks, Pure Stock, Sportsman, and more. You can also attend the GCRS Truck Tour, which will be happening on each aforementioned date of the series.
Upcoming Races
Mobile International Speedway holds all kinds of fun events throughout the year, so you can almost guarantee that something exciting will happen during your vacation. Of course, the Gulf Coast Racing Series is taking up most of the schedule for 2022. We’re still waiting on information about future races, but if you know you’re vacationing to Alabama soon, be sure to do some more research closer to the date of your trip!
One thing we know for sure: there are likely to be several practice nights that you can attend. These practice nights often happen a few days before a big race, allowing participants to come out and get used to the track before the big day.
