War History – Battle of Mobile Bay

Dauphin Island, renowned for its spectacular Gulf views and pristine beaches, is a little piece of secluded paradise located just off the coast of Alabama. Visitors come to soak in the sun and enjoy nature, yet many don’t realize the historical significance of the island. On your next trip, be sure to visit Fort Gaines, a famous Civil War fortress.

The History of Mobile Bay Battles

On August 5th, 1864, during the Civil War, a Union fleet commanded by Rear Admiral David G. Farragut attacked a Confederate fleet and the three forts guarding the entrance to Mobile Bay. Dauphin Island’s very own Fort Gaines was one of these three forts, and over 150 years later, it continues to guard the entrance to the bay.

Originally a pre-Civil War brick fortification, today it still houses original cannons, a blacksmith shop, kitchens, and tunnels. Its well-preserved ramparts are now a beloved historical site and one of the top tourist attractions on the island. Guided tours are held in period uniform and include a cannon firing demonstration and blacksmithing.

What is The Battle of Mobile Bay Commemoration?

Every August, a special ceremony is held to commemorate the historical battle for control of Mobile Bay. The event highlights the importance of Fort Gaines in the battle through dramatic reenactment. Actors portray both sides of the conflict, dressed as either Union or Confederate soldiers, to bring the story to life and educate audiences. Fort Gaines’ cannon will be fired every 45 minutes in honor of the soldiers who fought, and blacksmith demonstrations will be running all day in the blacksmith shop. There will be military demonstrations, training, and more.
