The Complete List of Dauphin Island’s Best Parks to Visit and Why

Located just off the coast of Alabama, you’ll find Dauphin Island, the state’s “hidden gem.” The island is renowned for its natural beauty: diverse ecosystems, pristine beaches, and phenomenal birdwatching. Scattered across the island, you’ll find many reserves and parks that showcase the immense biodiversity. Here are a few of the top parks on Dauphin Island.

Shell Mounds

If you’re interested in the history of Dauphin Island, Shell Mound Park provides a rare glimpse into the lives of its original inhabitants. The park features archaeological mounds of discarded oyster shells and fish. While it may not seem like much, the mounds are over 500 years old and are one of the few remnants of the Native American culture that once lived here.

There are also beautiful forested trails, perfect for birdwatching or a stroll with the family.

The Goat Trees

Close to Shell Mound Park, you’ll find small, wooded areas forested by giant oak trees the locals refer to as “Goat Trees.” Legend has it, the trees provided shelter to wild goats that would climb into the trees at night to protect themselves from alligators. While you’re unlikely to see wild goats, the area still provides a beautiful spot for a stroll, picnic, or birdwatching.

Audubon Bird Sanctuary

Ranked as one of the top four birding destinations in North America, the Audubon Bird Sanctuary is one of the island’s top attractions and a must-see for nature lovers. There are over 164 acres of habitat with six different trails to wander. You’re guaranteed to spot many unique and beautiful bird species along these trails – over 400 bird species are known to frequent Dauphin Island!

Aloe Bay Park

Located on DeSoto Avenue within Dauphin Island’s working waterfront, you’ll find Aloe Bay Park. It’s a small, peaceful waterfront park that serves as an excellent spot for launching kayaks because of its sandy bottom and gradual entry. It’s also a short boat ride away from fishing locations such as the Mississippi Sound and local estuaries. If you’d prefer to soak in the waterfront view, the park is an excellent place for picnicking. It’s also conveniently located next to the Pelican Pub, so you can grab a drink before or after your time in the park.

Bayou Heron Park

Like Aloe Bay Park, Bayou Heron Park provides picnic tables and waterfront views. It’s equipped with a kayak launch and a small dock for fishing. The park is located at 1608 Cadillac Avenue.

Cadillac Square

Stroll underneath live, sprawling oak trees at Cadillac Square. These ancient trees are the only remnants of Governor Cadillac’s home in the Louisiana Territory capital. It’s a beautiful place for reflection and a romantic spot to picnic. The park is sometimes used for festivals, birding, and large school groups.
