Mardi Gras on Dauphin Island and Mobile

From the downtown center of Mobile, Alabama, to the rich coastline of stunning beaches on Dauphin Island, the next few months are filled with events ushering in another year of thrills. The state of Alabama is primed and ready to celebrate another year of Mardi Gras, the oldest annual carnival celebration in the United States.

Below is your guide and overview to Alabama Mardi Gras celebrations and related Dauphin Island events for 2018.

A Nationally Renowned Mardi Gras Celebration

The Mardi Gras celebration on Dauphin Island is nationally-renowned for its DIY ethics, commitment and independent status. Because real estate is precious on the island, floats are stored on the mainland for the duration of the year and transported 10 miles over the bridge and to the island.

Serious effort goes into retaining the floats over the windy high-rise Dauphin Island Bridge. The floats are weighted, tied, and covered in plastic for the run across Alabama. Multiple parades and events held by a wide variety of groups are held in the weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, with dedication and excitement that is hard to find outside of Louisiana.

The Celebrations on Dauphin Island

The beautiful beaches of Dauphin Island will offer fun for the season, mostly contained to the first few weeks of February.

The celebration begins in Dauphin Island with January 13th’s Krewe de la Dauphine Float Parade at 1 p.m. and follow-up Evening Ball at the Bayou La Batre Community Center (12745 Padgett Switch Road, Irvington, AL) on the same day.

The same group has created a follow-up parade for the island. The Dauphin Island People’s Parade is January 20th at 1 p.m. It is partly a continuation of the original parade and partly a new event that features the “audience.”

It is followed by the family friendly Krewe of Riviere du Chien parade for kids at 2 p.m. the same day. Visitors will be able to participate in the parade directly, creating a powerful community-driven event to complement Mardi Gras.

The Mardi Gras Calendar in Mobile and the Mainland

The Mardi Gras events in Alabama mostly begin on Dauphin Island. But this is only the beginning of a series of celebrations and activities that continue to mid-February throughout the Mobile area. Visitors this time of year will get to enjoy many parties, restaurant specials, event discounts, and several opportunities for parades.

As one example, visitors to the region can see the spectacle of the Crewe of Columbus. It coincides with the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, February 9th at 6:30 p.m.

The Mystics of Time are showcasing their atmospheric parade February 10th at 6 p.m., which is occurring parallel to the Mystics of Pleasure parade in Orange Beach. Both events begin at 6 p.m.

The Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday celebration officially concludes with a series of smaller events in Mobile February 13th from 10 a.m. to about 8 p.m. This includes the MAMGA Mammoth Parade on Route B in Mobile, which begins at 2 p.m., and the Gulf Shores Parade gathering at 10 a.m.

Many parties and events lead to this big and bombastic Fat Tuesday. Again, the Mobile Mask has an up-to-date breakdown of all related events for the Mardi Gras celebration in 2018.
