Christmas Tree Recycling on Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island may have some of the most vital ecological sites on the Gulf coast. At only about 14 miles in length, two miles wide at its thickest point, and roughly six square miles in area, there may not seem to be a lot happening near our Dauphin Island rentals. Despite its quaint first appearance, Dauphin Island is, in fact, a sensational, remote vacation destination and place to live.

The community, visiting and residing, has a reputation for taking care of Dauphin Island’s wildlife and nature. A great example of this is their Christmas Tree Recycling Program, which calls all those who celebrate with a live tree to dispose of it properly in the wake of the season.

About 1,500 people on Dauphin Island every year rally to properly dispose of their pines, firs, and spruces – those who own fake trees can simply box it up for next year.

The Christmas Tree Recycling Program on Dauphin Island is a fantastic way for islanders to embrace their love of conservation.

The Program

The initiative was put in effect by the Alabama Environmental Council in collaboration with local counties. The website at AL.com lists different drop-off sites statewide for each county in Alabama.

The Mobile County program was spearheaded for 20 years by “Keep Mobile Beautiful,” but a recent statewide adoption and an expansion of the program forced groups such as the urban forestry department to take a more active role. The program is in relation to the recent Dauphin Island sand dune conservation efforts.

How is the Tree Recycled?

The trees are put to many purposes. Commonly, the Mobile County trees are delivered to the Orange Cove Brush Holding Site. Here, they are used as mulch in local city park projects, landscaping schools, and other public property maintenance. The idea that our Christmas trees are reused to landscape parks and playgrounds perfectly encapsulates the holiday spirit.

How to Prepare the Tree for Recycling

Preparing the tree for recycling requires very little effort. Only the tree can be recycled, of course. You will have to remove anything not a part of the tree. This includes tree stands, decorations, lights, and that gorgeous glowing star on top.

The tree can easily be tied atop a car or transported in the back of a truck. You won’t have to worry about keeping the branches intact like you did when you picked it up.

Christmas Tree Recycling Drop-Off Points

The final drop-off sites are not confirmed, but organizers are expected to utilize many of the same locations as 2017. The old “Keep Mobile Beautiful” sites are no longer in use, according to a 2017 Fox10 report for Mobile.

Dauphin Island locals should utilize designated locations on Bienville Boulevard West. Signs will be posted on the road for the exact drop-off location, so keep an eye out over the next few weeks. Possible sites in Mobile include Baumhauer Park, Dog River Park, Springhill Recreation Center, Public Safety Memorial Park, Lake Drive Tricentennial Park, and Medal of Honor Park. Dauphin Island residents can use these points as well.

When Can You Drop Off Your Tree?

Drop-off typically begins a few days after the New Year’s festivities. It is expected to run from around January 5 to 14, though specific dates and times will be announced close to Christmas.

How Else Can Christmas Trees Be Recycled?

Some residents and property owners have taken a more DIY approach to recycling their tree. Many individuals have used the trees for Dauphin Island sand dune conservation and habitat renewal. Call the city for details on how this process works.
