World War II represents an era of crowning achievement for the United States. It also represents a historical precedence of darkness and hope. All of this can be realized by the lengthy and enthralling efforts of the crew behind the WWII Living History Event on Dauphin Island.
A team of passionate neighbors focuses on creating a living history memorial to the ethos of World War II, the surviving veterans with the stories to share, and the veterans who saw the war unfold- and did not live to tell it.
There is a World War II Living History event about twice a year on Dauphin Island. The first occurs around March and the fall event is typically around November. Consider taking a vacation around this time to take advantage of either of these emotionally rewarding and authentic war events.
What can you expect to see in the next upcoming WWII Living History event?
The event uses the historic Fort Gaines as a backdrop for the ensuing war. Guests will see a group of soldiers, decked in authentic garb and recreated weaponry, go through a typical day at war on the cusp of a major battle.
Soldiers will undergo drilling exercises, typical of the soldiers of the time in prepping for battle. They will prepare weapons, food, and equipment under the guise of an authentic camping site.
Various demonstrations will occur as if you are a visitor to the camp. The blacksmiths will offer demonstrations in the blacksmith shop, showcasing the details that go into crafting the tools provided to WWII soldiers of the time. It’s a window into another world – an era of military might and courage.
Location and Date
The event this year is March 10th and Nov 17th. It begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. During this time, demonstrations of various kinds will occur for weapon crafting, posturing, exercises and more. Foods and snacks will be available for visitors.
The event is at Historic Fort Gaines. Fort Gaines is located at 51 Bienville Blvd, Dauphin Island, AL 36528. It is on the very far eastern end of Dauphin Island. In the nearby area, about a mile north, you can find the main Mobile Bay Ferry point to travel the gulf.
Fort Gaines is a real historic fort built in the early 1800s. It was most famously used during the Civil War during the pivotal battle of Mobile Bay. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is an incredible sight to see regardless of the living WWII event. The fort grounds offer dazzling water views and plentiful trails for exploring the historical site surroundings.
Admission Costs
Ages 13 and up are $8 and ages 5-12 are $4. Admission includes all-day entrance to Fort Gaines and the ongoing WWII Living History Event. Cash and card are accepted. For any additional details not disclosed above, please contact the organizing members at 251-861-6992.
