February Message from Bill Harper

Dear Friends,

Our February board meeting held this past Saturday was a calm one. Not a large crowd, but a very rainy day probably kept some away.

Probably the biggest change we saw in January was the paving of our entrance road and most of the parking lot east of the grill and pro shop. It looks good, and we will be do the parking striping shortly.

The brightest news of the day concerned the finances of the DIPOA.  With a gloomy economy all around us, we seem to be doing well. The end of the calendar year 2008, showed that our income over expenses for May through December was $89, 203. Last year we were a negative -$37, 183 at this point. Remember, the last four months of our fiscal year are the busiest for the golf course, so the indications are that we will have a good year.  My thanks to our staff who are doing a great job holding down expenses, while our golf play is up 10%. Ongoing enhancements of the golf course have, doubtless, been a key factor. Our increased royalty income of 20% has also helped, along with a 10% increase in memberships. It all adds up, thanks to all.

Jeff Collier, our Operations Director, announced that the snowbird season is comparable to last year, so this is good news for both us and the Island.

The legal situation is currently somnolent. With the West Surf Beach issue settled, we move toward a behind-the-scene resolution of the Pitts covenant case.  As I mentioned last month, a special master is has been named to assist the court in adjudicating this case.  We are still under a gag-order in matters concerning the Corps settlement.

I continue to work with Mayor Collier and the Town of Dauphin Island to obtain funding for engineering studies of our coastline through federal funding both in the regular budget and in the stimulus package.  The Town's consultant in Washington is orchestrating our efforts to obtain funding through local organizations like us, as well as through state and local politicians.

Our Annual Meeting is upcoming this May 9th, a Saturday at 11:00 am. As always, we have three seats on the board of directors up for election. If you want to aid your community and our Island's property owners association, please contact us concerning this election, and send us a 200 word bio, including your thoughts on key issues facing our island.  Send your bio-statement by e-mail at dipoa@skyynett.com or by snail mail: DIPOA, PO Box 39, Dauphin Island, AL 36528. We need these by April 1, 2009.

We had two proposals offered by local entrepreneurs for the beach and Club area, which we will consider carefully, once we receive them as written statements.

Our next few board and the annual meeting dates are as follows:

Board of Directors meeting, Thursday, March 12, 7 pm.
Board of Directors meeting, Thursday, April 9, 4:30 pm.
Annual Meeting/Board of Directors, Saturday, May 9, 11:00 am.

All the best,

William (Bill) Harper
President
