Volunteer Standard Operating Procedures for

Beach Sweep Pilot Program

· Volunteers shall ensure that they are properly checked in and out each day

· Volunteers will conduct shoreline observation patrols in predetermined locations on Dauphin Island, Alabama. Patrols outside of designated areas identified are not authorized.

· Volunteers will walk along the high tide line and stay at least FIVE FEET AWAY from any oil. Also, don not walk into the upland or into the surf zone. Please note that highly sensitive habitat areas may be in close proximity and are not to be disturbed.

· Volunteers will avoid disturbing wildlife, especially nesting shorebirds. Volunteers will stay out of all closed bird nesting areas and obey all posted signs.

· During these patrols, members are to identify and log the geographical location of any tar balls, mousse mats, emulsified oils, or oily sheens observed during the course of these patrols. If a GPS is available, coordinates of the observation will be documented and forwarded on as part of the reporting requirements.

· Volunteer members SHALL NOT touch or recover any potential tar balls, mousse mats, emulsified oil, or any material that appears to be oil.
