DAUPHIN ISLAND, Alabama (WALA) - Dauphin Island is the only barrier between the oil and many sensitive bays and estuaries. That's one reason why Mobile County Commissioner Mike Dean wants to make sure there is protection to the east and west of the island.
"We really don't need any oil in the bay, and that's what we are focusing on and that's why we have so many people out here today, so they can surveillance and making sure the boom is in place," Dean said as he toured the mouth of Mobile Bay.
There is one skimming boat at the mouth of Mobile Bay and another on the bay side of the Katrina Cut, on the west end of Dauphin Island. Neither of the two skimmers were actually skimming, but Marine Police Officer Brian Owens said it's crucial they are there.
"It's going to be very important if they get the oil. We are going to need everything in place to keep the oil outta here," Owens said.
There were several spotters accompanying the skimmers. Those boats are a part of the Vessels of Opportunity program being funded by BP.
Even though there were only two skimmers, Dean said he felt confident they could efficiently complete their job and protect Mobile Bay and the Mississippi Sound. Dean added if more skimmers are needed, he will order them immediately.
The mouth of Fowl River is another major opening where oil could come through and contaminate even more estuaries. Because of the sensitivity of the mouth of the river, boom is double and triple-layered in that area.
Dean said the extra protection is critical.
"Well, this is where the baby fish are spawning and area, and the whole Gulf is right here in the area the Mississippi Sound, and this is the most precious waterways we have on the Gulf Coast is right where we are floating," Dean added.
About a dozen bottle nose porpoises played in front of the skimmer as it made rounds around the west end of Dauphin Island. They are a powerful reminder of just how precious the wildlife in our area is.
